Deception Island in Antarctica (one of the locations in A Trip to the Bottom of the World) is the caldera of an active volcano that last erupted in 1969. While the island provides a safe harbour for boats, the narrow entranceway is treacherous and difficult to navigate. Inside the caldera, the black beaches offer warm, swimmable waters (depending on the weather and local currents).
